http://www.museoreinasofia.es/en/collection/artwork/guernica This painting called "Guernica" by Picasso is famous for depicting a German bombing of a Basque town, purposely targeting civilians. I personally define art as anything that makes you think or pushes a veiwer to feel something. In this piece, Picasso shows the raw terror of the civilian of Guernica and the horror of war. The image is unsettling and somehow captures movement in this frozen moment of pain. It has elements of nature, humanity, and greater beings. It features fallen soldiers, screaming men, and crying women clutching their babies. It all seems foreign and surreal, due to the cubism Picasso was known for, but it’s also familiar and terrible. You can recognize it for what it is, chaos and war and tragedy, even when it is so alien. -eileen
https://www.artspace.com/dorothea_lange/migrant_mother_nipomo_california To me art is a way that people use to express themselves, ideas, feelings, thoughts and just things about our world, especially things that may be difficult to put into just plain, everyday words. For my art work I chose Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California by Dorthea Lange. This is a very famous photograph from The Great Depression of a relatively young mother and her children. I feel this is great art work because it is so powerful. Initially looking at the picture the woman looks quite old but as I look at it more I see that she is actually only in her thirties. The way that her expression, worry lines, line of sight and body language age her is amazing. That alone communicates so much about what her life was like. I can't imagine a piece of writing could ever capture this woman's life a a way as holistically as the photo does, and this makes it facinating and a work that could be look at and analyzed for a long time.
http://allpainters.org/paintings/two-pieces-of-bread-expressing-the-sentiment-of-love-salvador-dali.html Like Eileen, great art to me is something that makes you think or feel something, it expresses an emotion or idea. I don't know how, but after reading the title 'Two Pieces of Bread Expressing the Sentiment of Love' by Salvador Dali and then looking at the painting, I can kinda see the 'sentiment of love' he was trying to portray, even though it is a picture of bread. It's not anything I would ever decide to think about, but the painting expresses a point to me, which is what I think art should do.
Also, I just enjoy Dali because a third of his paintings are named like this. Some of the best in my opinion include 'Bed and Two Bedside Tables Ferociously Attacking a Cello', 'Fountain of Milk Spreading Itself Uselessly on Three Shoes', 'Man Holding Up a Baby as Though He Were Drinking from a Bottle', and my personal favorite, 'Fried Egg on the Plate without the Plate'.
Sorry for the infinitely long url, but I couldn't find the name of the painting. It's by Thomas Kinkade, and is a landscape painting of a cute stone house adorned with Christmas lights with a beautiful sky and sparkling snow. The painting reminds me of home and happy times with the Christmas lights. Great art, to me, must make me feel something, or simply impress me with its beauty. This painting does both. I love the detail put into the painting, and the colors are simply stunning in this piece.
I like "The Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. The artwork is pretty much what it sounds like, a night with bright stars looking over a moonlit village, while there is a large, green structure that can be a tree, I'm not very sure what it is. Great art to me is art that at first, looks nice to eye. I don't have to see its meaning right off the bat for me, it just has to look good. This art does it for me. I don't know what the hell it's suppose to mean, it just looks good.
I think that truly great art is art that tells a story. I don't think that modern, abstract art is great, because is does not provide enough context for someone to create a story. Classical art is not necessarily great either, for it sometimes fails to stimulate the imagination. My favorite pieces are depictions of Greek myths and the bible, or the surrealist work of Dali and Picasso. The piece in the link depicts the mythological Orpheus, an unparalleled musician. One can almost here the music he plays, or feel the pluck of the strings. Even the great beasts in the piece are in awe of him. -Ethan Coyle
This painting is by Georges Seurat and it's called The Circus. This is my favorite painting because art should be a visualize of story or an event that happened. In this painting you can clearly tell that Seurat was at a circus and he saw some some acrobats, a magician, a dancer, and many other stuff. This painting is great because of all so the style of the painting where the artists paints with tiny dots, it's called pointillism.
I'm going to go with The School of Athens, for several reasons. First off, there's an incredible amount of detail on the building itself, from the sculptures in the back to the metallic gold inlays in the upper corners, and it's all incredibly realistic, something I have more of an appreciation for after trying to draw realistic stuff myself. I also like all the cameos from famous artists and philosophers scattered over the painting. There's symbolism tying into the views of the philosophers, and the mythical nature of the 'school' they're in. It has deeper meaning, pleasing aesthetics, and personal appeal.
I went with Red Fuji by Houkusai. It is a wood block print. I believe that art is something that make one feel emotion. I chose this one because it invokes a calming feeling in me. For context of the piece is it is pat of Houkusai's thirty-six views of mount fuji. I also like the striking colors and simple design while still showing what everything is.
This painting of The Great Wave off the Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai is considered “great art” to me. What great art considers to me is that I has meaning and value to the artwork. It can’t just be a single dot on a white canvas because that is not a great piece of artwork. I love beautiful colors in an artwork and has emotions and I have my own imagination. I would consider a good art if I can look at it for a long time and I won’t forget the piece of artwork. This artwork relates to how much I love the ocean and how each wave crash sounds.
I enjoy Barbara Krueger's art because it provides social commentary. It combines the usage of text and color contrast with the usage of 3 total colors. However, even though the visuals are simple the message it conveys is not. Most of her work criticizes the materialistic focus the modern world has taken and also criticizes the expectations and portrayal of people in popular media. Her work also had a influence on modern art and graphic design. I consider great art to evoke emotion and her work definitely conveys emotion using red, white, and black in her images.
This is a painting done by Pablo Picasso, called "The death of Casagemas". Carlos Casagemas was Pablo Picasso's best friend, so when he decided to take his own life by shooting himself in the head, Picasso decided to paint him, including his wound, in the coffin. After that Picasso fell into a deep depression and began painting everything in different shades of blue. I consider great art, to be any piece of art that can tell a story, even if it is not understood by spectators. This can be seen through "the death of Casagemas" as he shows that his best friend is dead, and that after
This image fits what I see as good art because it is cleanly done and evokes emotions. The nighttime and rain makes the image cozy and the destroyed buildings make it somber. - Matthew Hebert
https://imgur.com/a/2Eq4K This image matches my definition of good art because it was formed with creativity and invokes positive emotions within me whenever I glance at it. It is humorous and beautifully done.
https://goo.gl/images/KuohPB To me, "good" art has to inflict some sort of emotion. It does not necessarily have to be organized or concrete. This is why I consider that picture to be "good art"; though it's somewhat abstract, it gives the observer a pleasant, nostalgic feeling.
This statue piece “ little dancer aged fourteen” Is a world renowned statue piece by Hilaire Germain- Edgar Degas. The tiny statue depicts a small 14 year old girl standing in fourth position. Her dress/tutu has started to degrade due to the fierce claws of time. The little girls hair is sculpted back and tied with an actual rippon, her face slightly tilted up describing the start of a dance. The way I define art is by how much effort you put into the work you are creating, and how it makes you feel. The “little dancer aged fourteen” is a peaceful statue holding its breath. It is art to me because it was sculpted to become a peice of art that was describing another form of art which was ballet. I found it incredible that two art forms where taken and poured into a concoction to create a renowned work of art. -Madeline Bronder
To me good art has to have meaning and when you look at it, it has to make you think. This picture of Starry Night really does make me think about what was the artist trying to picture when painting this. Also, this art really has a magnificent splash and array of various colors that really grab your attention when you see it and or walk by this painting.
I chose A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat. I first saw it in a Looney Toons movie when I was little and I found the neatness of the piece comforting. I later saw it in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when I had a better appreciation and understanding for art, and was stunned by the form of pointillism used in the piece.
I define art as a perspective. All artists’ work is influenced by their current lifestyle, and it shows greatly within the piece. An artist’s experiences and emotions can show in details such as color, form, or brush strokes.
I define art as a display of someones character and this may come in many ways, eg. drawings, music, sports etc, all of these may be considered art forms in their own ways. I believe that there is no such thing as bad art because of the different variety of art forms we have, for example in the art form above, we can just see a huge mess of different drawings combined together, but in Picasso's eyes, we can see a depiction of what a dramatic situation looks like.
To me good art is like a window into another world, and can teach the observer about its world. The amount of information that can be derived from a piece of art, is directly proportional to its artistic value. However the term bad art is more of an oxymoron than anything else because even crude art made with little skill still has the ability to convey thousands of tomes worth of information, without saying a single word.
For me, great art has never been something that I feel I or any individual alone can pinpoint. Great art is something that can resonate with people, or resonate with the artist, but mainly I personally feel that the quality of art is really up to the artist and their perspective. Art isn't a matter of like or dislike, but liking a piece can make it great for the individual. An example of this is this painting which I'll link here https://i.pinimg.com/originals/c4/43/65/c44365ef4b0b316393010018c3a73e08.jpg
For me, this piece is so simple yet thoughtful, and pleasing to the eye. Whenever I see pieces like it in museums I'm immediately drawn to it for some reason, although many people don't feel as strongly about it as I do. For that reason I think that great art is in the eye of the beholder or the artist.
